How A Mom Can Set Healthy Boundaries To Get More "Me Time"

Moms are especially overwhelmed and burned out with the extra pandemic workload, and now the holidays.

I was having coffee with a mom friend of mine. She shared how incredibly stressed she was, and feeling weepy most days. I knew all too well how that felt, and put my arm around her in solidarity. It felt like she was at her breaking point. I asked her what she thought could help her, and she practically came out of her skin with her response..."more self-care!"

Moms need more self-care and less self-neglect

Moms are so good at taking care of all their loved ones, friends, co-workers, family pets that it just sort of flies under the radar. But you know who gets consistently left off the list?...She does. I'm gonna admit to being a reformed "rescuer" or "caregiver" to the detriment of my own mental, emotional and physical health. In fact, this behavior, which I whole-heartedly own, sent me into a healing crisis. It was Chronic Fatigue. My healing journey took me a few years. I had to scrap all my old ways of relating to my role as a woman and mother, to revamp or reinvent my new way of relating to the world.

How a mom can set healthy boundaries

The first thing I realized was my huge pattern of self-neglect. Everything else took precedence. I would say..."oh, lemme just get to that, and then I'll make myself some food." Or I’d run to the rescue, sometimes even when it was asked for, to solve a myriad of problems for everyone. Boy, was that a huge energy drain. Again, I’m gonna take full responsibility for my actions, so I can let go of the victim mentality. When I finally did this, I was on the road to liberation.
